Democrats Stick with Berding

A slate of nine people was recommended for endorsement tonight by the local Democratic Party for this fall’s Cincinnati City Council elections.

The Cincinnati Democratic Committee’s endorsement group recommended a slate that includes incumbents Jeff Berding, Laketa Cole, John Cranley, David Crowley and Cecil Thomas, along with former Councilwoman Minette Cooper and challengers Brian Garry, Greg Harris and Wendell Young.

Aryeh Alex, co-chair of the endorsement group, said the CDC would hold a general membership meeting soon to make a final decision on endorsements, possibly late next week.

The endorsement group first voted on the slate as a whole for its recommendation, which was approved, party sources said. Then, in an unusual move, the candidates were again voted upon individually. Each of the candidates received a recommendation for approval, but with varying vote totals that weren’t available this evening, sources said.

Berding, who is sales director for the Cincinnati Bengals, has irritated some rank-and-file Democrats with his budget positions and frequent alliances with Republicans.
