Chesley Hires Petro

Local lawyer Stan Chesley is known as a prominent Democratic campaign contributor and a longtime Friend of Bill (Clinton), but he’s also given generously to Republican candidates in recent years and now has hired Ohio’s former attorney general at his law firm.

Jim Petro, the former Republican AG who left office due to term limits and briefly sought the GOP nomination for the Ohio’s governor race last year, was hired Tuesday at the Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley law firm, located on Fourth Street downtown.

Petro and Chesley had several connections, prior to the hiring.

Chesley held a fundraiser for Petro in his failed Republican gubernatorial bid and also donated about $40,000 to the unsuccessful re-election campaign of former Hamilton County Commissioner Phil Heimlich, a Republican who lost to Democrat David Pepper in November. Heimlich was briefly Petro’s running mate.

Later, Petro appointed Chesley’s law firm to represent the Ohio Tuition Trust Authority in its lawsuit against a pension investment fund.

Chesley has hosted Clinton at his Amberley Village estate three times over the years. Clinton appointed Chesley’s wife, Susan Dlott, to fill a judgeship on the U.S. District Court.
