Pepper to Take Office
Marking the beginning of a new era for the Hamilton County Commission, David Pepper will be sworn in as a commissioner Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Pepper, a Democrat, defeated Republican incumbent Phil Heimlich in last month’s election. Pepper will join Commissioner Todd Portune in forming the first Democratic majority on the three-member board since 1962.
Retired U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Nathaniel R. Jones will administer the oath of office to Pepper. The commissioner-elect, who also is an attorney, once served as a law clerk for Jones. The Rev. C. Dennis Edwards of Southern Baptist Church in Avondale will deliver the invocation.
At least two other prominent local Democrats are expected to speak at the event, but their appearances haven’t yet been finalized, a Pepper aide said. The 11 a.m. ceremony will be held in the sixth-floor commission offices at the county administration building on Court Street.
