The Bong Show

When (or, to avoid a CityBeat piss test and/or a DEA raid, I’d better say, “If, hypothetically”) I smoke pot, I usually end up crashed out on the couch watching random things on TV that suddenly seem mesmerizing — Home Shopping Network, Pink Panther re-runs, Fox News or a recent favorite, Midnight Money Madness, a live, FIVE-HOUR “game show” on TBS. MMM is an absolute glorious trainwreck, perhaps the worst thing ever put on television, but the best part is when stoners stuck on the channel call in from around the country and try to win $100 by answering equally mind-numbing questions. (Sadly, it appears the show has been cancelled — back to the A-Team reruns!) Like Little Debbies and the Grateful Dead, TV is something greatly enhanced by a little puff of the dinky dank. Leave it to the pot-smokers’ Bible, High Times, to create a whole awards program just for THC-friendly television shows (and movies … ’cause film-going is another great stoner adventure, thanks largely to the immediate access to an endless supply of Junior Mints and Milk Duds).

On Tuesday, High Times’ presented its sixth annual (or was it seventh?) Stony Awards at BB King’s nightclub in New York City. The ceremonies featured weed-friendly celebrities (rapper Redman and Doug Benson, creator of the play The Marijuana-Logues and talking head on VH1’s Best Week Ever, hosted) and awarded some projects that are good even without a bong hit (the TV show Weeds and the film A Scanner Darkly) … and some that absolutely require several (Grandma’s Boy? My Fair Brady?). And the Stonys went to …
