WOXY Is Back On!

Locally-based Alt music Internet radio station WOXY is back on the air as of 10:10 a.m. this morning (making the return time 10:10 a.m. on 10/10 … glad they didn’t wait until 2010 for total symmetry). Following the sounds of a ticking countdown clock, the station returned with MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams,” the same song they went off the air with just less than a month ago. I’ve had to reconnect a few times already just to listen (no doubt there’s a lot of people logging in to hear them come back, making the streams a little slow), but some of the on-air personalities have been on talking about the station’s miraculous rebirth.

Just days after going off the air last month, word spread that entrepeneur Bill Nguyen — who founded the online used CD trading site, lala.com — was interested in saving the station. Nguyen is reportedly spending millions to give WOXY the kind of financial backing that its critical notoriety and taste-making playlist deserves. Nguyen is integrating the station with the lala service, allowing lala members access to WOXY’s huge library of music so they can create their own “radio stations,” streams that other members will be able to listen to at their leisure. It is free to sign up for an account at lala.com.

The station is also back to being free for listeners and the site says the streams will be upgraded to even higher quality in the next few weeks (sounds pretty good so far). The station is bringing back its popular “Lounge Act” live music series starting today at 4 p.m. with a set from Headlights (the shoegaze-y, Champaign, Ill., Indie band plays downtown at The Poison Room tonight). Future Lounge Acts include in-studio performances from The Purrs (who played a great show at the Southgate House this past Friday and are fronted by former Cincinnatian Jim Antonio) tomorrow at 4 p.m., The Wrens on Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. and Minus the Bear on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. (check tomorrow’s CityBeat for an interview with The Bear). The station’s site says they will be opening studios all over the country in order to record even more “Lounge Act” sessions.

Welcome back, old friend! — Mike Breen

How does lala.com make money? Seems like a small-returns business. This Nguyen fella must’ve made a mint somewhere.

Love having woxy back. I didn’t really listen much when it went to subscription-only, but the new streams sound so good, I can’t seem to turn it off now.
