Austin City Limits Returns to PBS

We said it last year and we’ll say it again: Austin City Limits is the best place on free or pay TV to hear/see great music. The show’s 32nd season begins tomorrow on PBS, with an hour from legendary Kinks frontman Ray Davies. If you have cable, you can catch it several times Saturday night on the various affiliates; on local Channel 48, CET sometimes runs behind schedule for some reason. Saturday, they are airing — according to their Web site — the Coldplay episode from last year instead (the network is back on schedule with the Oct. 14 show).

The rest of the season lives up to the show’s renewed reputation for featuring fresher acts alongside the expected Roots music faves and legends. This season, ACL has The New Orleans Social Club, featuring members of the Neville Brothers and The Meters (Oct. 14), Latin music legend Juanes (Oct. 21), Alejandro Escovedo (Oct. 28), Sufjan Stevens and Calexico (Nov. 4), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Nov. 11), Van Morrison (Nov. 18), Corinne Bailey Rae and KT Tunstall (Dec. 16), Los Lonely Boys and The Gourds (Dec. 23), The Raconteurs and Cat Power (Dec. 30), Damian Marley (Jan. 6), James Blunt (Jan. 13) and The Dixie Chicks (Jan. 20). — Mike Breen
