Where’s Phil? Indian Hill

As most area political candidates marched Thursday in Cheviot’s annual Harvest Home Parade, there was one notable absence: Hamilton County Commission President Phil Heimlich.

For decades the Harvest Home Parade has served as the unofficial kickoff for the annual campaign season, an intense blitz of appearances and debates in the two months before the November election. Officeholders not seeking re-election in a particular year often march along with the various floats. In years past, Cincinnati City Council has even switched its meeting time to earlier in the day to ensure all members can make it to the parade.

Once again this year politicos hit the street next to marching bands, Rotary Clubs and the like. Among the candidates present was Democrat David Pepper, a former Cincinnati city councilman who is campaigning against Heimlich for his seat on the Hamilton County Commission.

Heimlich, however, was busy throwing a fundraiser at an Indian Hill mansion during the parade. The event was at the home of Craig and Frances Lindner and featured Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a possible 2008 Republican presidential nominee, as the keynote speaker. Admission was $1,000 per person for “donors” and $2,000 per person for “VIPs,” who could get their photographs taken with Romney.

Among people on the fundraiser’s host committee were Reds owner Bob Castellini; developer Robert Rhein; John Barrett, CEO of the Western & Southern Financial Group; County Prosecutor Joe Deters; attorney Stan Chesley; jail task force chair Crystal Faulkner; Henry Fischer, CEO of Fischer Homes; and eight members of the Lindner family.

How much was raised at Heimlich’s event won’t be known until mid-October, the next filing deadline for campaign finance reports.

Heimlich’s perceived snub raised the specter of traditional West side/East side rivalries and was noted by labor union groups, who support Pepper. As they marched in the parade, the groups shouted: “Where’s Phil? Indian Hill.”
