Signs of the Times in New Orleans

New Orleans — Utility poles are usually covered with cardboard “Garage Sale” or black-lettered “Work from Home” signs tacked up for short periods of time before workers tear them off. In New Orleans, street lights still list at a 30-degree angle, and there are so many houses awaiting demolition that electrical crews have more important things to worry about than signs on posts. So they’re accumulating, and they’re a pretty good indication of the shift in the local economy.

Members of Give Back Cincinnati, the United Way Young Leaders Society, YP Habitat of Cincinnati and others make up the team of 47 volunteers (three were called away by family emergencies at the last minute) who rolled into the Crescent City at 9:30 a.m. this morning in advance of participating in a Habitat for Humanity construction project in the upper-ninth ward. These signs were just a few of the things we saw on the drive.
