Republicans Skip Jail ‘Deadline’

Today is the self-imposed deadline for the Hamilton County Commission’s Republican majority to reveal their plan for funding a new jail, and as of 2 p.m. no announcements have been made.

When Commission President Phil Heimlich announced a deal April 5 to house up to 200 Hamilton County prisoners per day at the Butler County Jail due to overcrowding here, he added that commissioners expected to unveil a proposal to fund and finance construction of a new jail within 60 days. At the time, Heimlich said he and fellow Commissioner Pat DeWine, the group’s other Republican, had been working on the issue for a year.

No formal announcement has yet been scheduled, but county government insiders say one proposal seriously being considered is asking voters to increase the county’s sales tax.

A sales tax increase might prove a tough sell: Voters still are smarting over a half-cent increase approved in 1996 to pay for new stadiums for the Reds and Bengals and development between the stadiums. The Bengals stadium opened in 1999 with about $58 million in overruns, and the retail and housing components haven’t materialized because tax revenues are far below initial projections.

Hamilton County is charged $65 daily for each prisoner it houses in Butler County.

How about that…yet another tax for the already oveburned taxpayers of Hamilton County, one of the fastest taxed counties in the entire Country !

I say, stack em up in the Jail.

You know what’s coming next if the Jail tax is approved – they build the jail, then Si says he “needs more money” to staff it with more deputies, more civilian employee,s more gas, more electric, more supplies…more…more…more.

They just keep bleeding the Hamilton County taxpayers to death.

Why don’t you do what the rest of us normal people are doing? Just leave. Let the gays and the blacks have the city and county.
